At the time of the article's original publication, heating with heating oil was still one of the more widespread methods of heating buildings and domestic hot water in Slovenia. For certain buildings, it represented a reliable and comfortable source of heating, particularly where a complete change of the heating system was neither practical nor economically justified.

In buildings with moderate energy consumption, a modern oil boiler can represent a rational solution in terms of initial investment, efficiency and ease of use. This was particularly true when replacing an old, worn-out or combination boiler with a newer, more energy-efficient oil-fired condensing boiler.

At the time the article was written, petroleum product prices were relatively low, so replacing an old oil boiler with a more modern condensing version was an attractive option for some users. Compared to older appliances, new condensing oil boilers provided better energy efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and a higher level of convenience in use.

Despite the prevalence of oil boilers at the time, a significant proportion of appliances in Slovenian homes were outdated and operated with lower efficiency. Combination boilers were also still relatively common, and their efficiency was often considerably lower than that of modern heating appliances.

In such cases, replacing an old, less efficient boiler with a newer appliance can represent a significant improvement in the efficiency of the heating system, a reduction in energy consumption and greater user comfort.

European legislation has gradually introduced stricter efficiency and emission requirements, meaning that new heating systems have had to meet increasingly high environmental and energy standards.
